More about Siena
The beautifully preserved city of Siena is truly one of the jewels of Tuscany.
The unique and expansive Piazza del Campo has been the site of the city's public
events for centuries including bullfights, festivals, executions and the famous
bareback horse race - Il Palio - which is held twice a year in 2 July and
16 August.
The Torre del Mangia crowns the Piazza del Campo and the city boasts wonderfully
preserved historic buildings and churches such as the famous Siena Duomo
(Cathedral). Siena is a bustling city, with one of the oldest universities in
Europe and offers many cultural events, concerts, cinema, theatre and a wide
range of sporting activities.
Siena is surrounded by beautiful countryside. To the north, the richness of the
Chianti landscape with towns like San Gimignano and Monteriggioni. To the south
of Siena, the Arbia valley leads to the hill-top town of Montalcino, home to the
famous Brunello wine. Towards the coast are the captivitating coastline towns
like Castiglione della Pescaia and nature reserves of Maremma.

experience.
